Week 2 | Let's Go Gown Shopping

Hello Beautiful!

Your gown is your first big wedding purchase. How you look and feel on wedding day typically makes the top of the priorities list.

Wedding gown choices are limitless, so browsing online first will help narrow down your options.

Knowing the necklines, styles, and fabrics will help make your shopping experience more fun when you head out to the boutiques.

top 5 gown shopping tips

Top 5 things to consider when shopping for your gown:

1. Start with a budget. Oh, come on, did you really think we were going to suggest something else as #1?!

  • The gown is just one piece of the overall look. Other elements to consider in your budget are:
    • Shoes
    • Bridal lingerie
    • Veil and other accessories
    • Alterations (you may want to add sleeves or a jacket to the gown, or embellishments like a belt)
  • Think about spending 7-10% on clothing and accessories including the groom’s tux/suit. We don’t include clothing and jewelry into our “wedding planning budget”, primarily because we Indians can sometimes get out of hand with our jewelry and clothing shopping (AND who am I to stop that :))
  • It does NOT include real jewelry either – this is more of an asset/investment that won’t just be worn on wedding day!

2. Timing. You must start 9-12 months in advance if you want a custom dress. Even “off the rack” gowns need to be altered, which usually requires a 6-month lead time at most boutiques.

3. Appointments. Once you have an idea of the styles you like, it’s time to try on a few!

  • Call local salons to find out what inventory they have available
  • Schedule an appointment.  Especially if you want to try on dresses on the weekend.
    • Busier times of the year can have a month long wait.
    • Allot a couple of hours per shop for each appointment.
    • Ask the wonderful ladies in your life to join you on this adventure. You’ll want the honest feedback and support. Include your bridesmaids, mom, and grandma, maybe?
    • Bring strapless undergarments to try on gowns.
    • Test if you will be comfortable in that gown for the entire day by practicing all the activities you will do on wedding day!

4. Don’t get stuck – on anything!

  • Wedding gown sizes run small, so do not be bothered by the size on the label!
  • Your bridal stylist may make suggestions, they see brides in dresses all day long, so be open to it.
  • Once you find a dress that you really do love, don’t feel like you need to try on several more options…commit!

5. Once you say YES –

  • Read the fine print on the salon contract.
  • Get the alterations done through the salon, it’ll make things much easier on your part.
  • Do not start a crazy workout plan as soon as you’ve gotten home. Alterations take roughly 6 months to get back.

Sip champagne, take pictures and enjoy shopping!
