Week 8 | 10-12 months prior to wedding day

Hello Beautiful!

What’s your wedding day look? Your lehenga is a HUGE wedding decision and purchase. How you look and feel on wedding day typically makes the top of the priorities list!

Lehenga choices are limitless, so browsing online first will help narrow down your options.

Knowing the necklines, styles, and fabrics will help make your shopping experience more fun when you head out to the boutiques.

TOP 5 LEHENGA SHOPPING TIPS

Top 5 things to consider when shopping for your wedding outfit:

1. Start with a budget. Oh, come on, did you really think we were going to suggest something else as #1?!

  • This is just one piece of the overall look. Other elements to consider in your budget are:
    • Shoes
    • Bridal lingerie
    • Dupatta and other accessories
    • Alterations (you may want to add sleeves or a jacket, or other embellishments)
  • Think about spending 7-10% on clothing and accessories including the groom’s sherwani. We don’t include clothing and jewelry into our “wedding planning budget”, primarily because we Indians can sometimes get out of hand with our jewelry and clothes shopping (AND who am I to stop that :))
  • It does NOT include real jewelry either – this is more of an asset/investment that won’t just be worn on wedding day!

2. Timing. You must start 9-12 months in advance if you want a custom dress. Even “off the rack” lehengas need to be altered, which usually requires a 6-month lead time at most boutiques.

3. It’s a marathon. Once you have an idea of the styles you like, it’s time to try on a few!

  • Your trip to India can really feel like a marathon, so pace yourself.  Start with clothes shopping for bride!!
  • Create a plan of all the stores you want to go to (start with 3-5)
    • Have a good breakfast and start early!
    • Allot a few hours per shop
    • Ask the wonderful people in your life to join you on this adventure. You’ll want the honest feedback and support. Include your mom, cousins and grandma, maybe?
    • Bring strapless undergarments
    • Test if you will be comfortable in standing and sitting for the entire ceremony!

4. Don’t get stuck – on anything!

  • You may see something in a color you never imagined yourself wearing on wedding day, try it on and be open to it.
  • Once you find a dress that you really do love, don’t feel like you need to try on several more options…commit!

5. Once you say YES –

  • Get the alterations done through the boutique, it’ll make things much easier on your part.
  • Do not start a crazy workout plan as soon as you’ve gotten home. Alterations take roughly 6 months to get back.

Sip champagne, take pictures and enjoy shopping!
