the sooner the better

So, you have chosen the day you’ll say I do, and now you can’t wait to tell the world! (formally, not on Instagram)

Keep in mind that guests get invited to several weddings within a year, so you want to be sure they block your wedding weekend before they commit to another. The question is, how do you announce it to those who need to know?

The most formal way would be with cards that are printed and then mailed to your guests. There are hundreds of design ideas at your disposal. But, before you can even think about starting to produce your save-the-dates, it may be a  good idea to do some research on the latest trends and past designs. I say this, not necessarily to copy them, (because of course, every couple is unique in their own way), but to get some inspiration!

Are Save-The-Dates That Important?

You and your groom-to-be should look at some options and decide which direction you’d like to go. Your announcements serve several purposes. They introduce you both as an officially engaged couple to your guests, tell them they are invited and let them know when the nuptials will occur. For the couple, creating these cards give you both a good platform for how you want to “brand” your wedding. If you really don’t have any ideas, then you’re somewhat wandering in the dark about your design, which may prove to be a lengthier process than one would hope.

If you’re in love with the idea of including a photo in your announcements, then the best thing to do when you find exactly what you both like is to share this design with your photographer.  Giving your photographer a concept of what you like will help him or her setup your photo shoot session for that purpose. Otherwise, yours and their time may be wasted if the result is a ton of pictures that you don’t use because you had a specific thing in mind.

Note To Self

Remember that when you are designing the layout for your save-the-date cards, it’s important to consider where the pertinent information will be placed! Leave room somewhere for your names, the date (duh!) and the city of your wedding. The announcement is meant to be simple and serve as a notification, so this basic information is sufficient. Some couples tend to add “invitation to follow,” which isn’t a requirement, but it is an option.

Electronic cards are becoming a very popular option these days to send save-the-date cards.  One of the biggest benefits of doing electronic cards (aside from saving on postage) is that you can ask guests to leave you their physical address so you don’t have to go through the trouble of finding all the addresses later. One of our favorite online greeting vendors is Paperless Post. They have very unique and elegant options, especially for wedding related announcements.

Now for some inspiration

As you can see below, there are several types of save-the-dates that could be used. Most list the three basic pieces of information, but you’re welcome to add more. Some couples prefer less and some prefer more. It’s up to you and your groom as to how much detail you’d like to include.
